Here are answers to some of the frequently asked questions.

Why should I do an antibody test?
Taking an antibody test is a great way of finding out if you have had Covid-19 in the past. The test detects this by recognising the presence of antibodies, specific to Covid-19 infection, in the blood. Knowing whether you have previously had Covid-19 will give you confidence and peace of mind, guiding your decision making, whether it be in returning to work or checking in on family and friends.

Detecting for the presence of antibodies on a regular basis can be used as a mechanism for organisations to gauge the proportion of their workforce who have already been exposed to the virus.

The tests are considered a key component in bringing the UK out of lockdown. The results provide essential information for tracking where the disease has been and forecasting the potential for future outbreaks.
What is antibody testing?
Antibody tests are, in principle, a quick indication of any infection. There are a variety of diagnostic tests and methods that have been developed to track antibody production in patients.

The tests XFM administer use a small blood sample from the patient to look for antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19. When someone gets COVID-19, their body usually makes antibodies. Therefore, by detecting for the presence of specific antibodies you can check whether an individual has had Covid-19 in the past.
How does the test work?
A small sample of blood is obtained from a pin-prick device from a finger, by a trained medical technician. The tests work like pregnancy tests. The testing stick contains proteins from the virus that antibodies bind to if they are present in a blood sample. If antibodies are present (positive result) a line will appear on the test stick.

Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system in response to an infection and are specific to that particular infection. It typically takes one to three weeks to develop these antibodies.

Antibody tests should 
not be used to diagnose COVID-19. To see if you are currently infected, you need a viral test. 
How accurate are the tests?
Very. The test picks up 100% of people who test positive for IgM antibodies and 96.7 % of people who test positive for IgG antibodies.
It also has a specificity of over 97.5 % - meaning it picks up virtually all people who have not had coronavirus - there are few false positives.

We have an ever increasing amount of independent validation of the tests that we are planning on using against the government approved Abbott and Roche ELISA lab based tests (Guys and St.Thomas, Imperial Collage London). They all show that the tests that we are planning on using, are as accurate on specificity and sensitivity as the ELISA approved tests.

How will I get my results?
You will receive your results around 10 minutes after providing your sample.

Our qualified medical technicians will then talk you through the results and provide a full outcome report and guidance going forward.

A digital copy of the Results Report will also be sent to the patient’s email address, and or via SMS.

What will the test results tell me?
A total of three detection lines are possible, with the control (C) line appearing when sample has been flowed through the cassette.
1 | Negative Result: If only the quality control line (C) appears and the detection lines G and M are not visible, then no novel coronavirus antibody has been detected and the result is negative.
2 | Positive Result, M only: If both the quality control line (C) and the detection line M appears, then the novel coronavirus IgM antibody has been detected and the result is positive for the IgM antibody.
3 | Positive Result, G only: If both the quality control line (C) and the detection line G appears, then the novel coronavirus IgG antibody has been detected and the result is positive for the IgG antibody.
4 | Positive Result, G and M: If the quality control line (C) and both detection lines G and M appear, then the novel coronavirus IgG and IgM antibodies have been detected and the result is positive for both the IgG and IgM antibodies.
If the test shows I’ve had COVID-19, am I now immune from it?
Scientists are unsure and there is still a lot to learn about coronavirus. Experts believe that while the presence of antibodies indicates a level of immunity, it is unclear whether people are completely protected and how long any immunity lasts.

Important to note that testing positive for IgM antibodies only means you have recently been infected but have not yet produced the antibody IgG that is associated with a level of immunity. You may be advised to continue to self-isolate, join the government track and trace system and re-test in one to two weeks to look again for conversion to IgG.

We advise everyone to continue to follow the appropriate government guidelines, even if they have had a positive antibody test.
I have symptoms, can I have an antibody test?
No, antibody tests should not be used to diagnose a current COVID-19 infection. To see if you are currently infected, you need a viral test.

To ensure the safety of our patients and staff, please let us know if you have had a sore throat, fever or other symptoms within the last 2 weeks. If you are currently sick, please talk to your doctor about options for testing and care.
What if i have never had any symptoms of COVID-19?
It doesn’t matter. Experts believe a proportion of people who have had Covid-19 never actually develop symptoms. Our test can identify people who have had coronavirus even if they have never had any indication they are infected.

Is there a Government seal of approval for this test?
The Government strategy is to "test, test, test".

The anti-body tests are an important part of the test and tracing strategy to fully understand the spread of the virus. This will allow us to support the government in the collection of data.

XF Medical is looking to use one of two independently validated testing products, BioMedomics and Orient Gene. Both are rapid point-of-care lateral flow immunoassay tests which have demonstrated to have the highest sensitivity when compared with other lateral flow immunoassays.

Both tests are CE marked showing approval for use in EU.
How do I find the testing centre nearest to me?
Our mobile units will be available in selected locations across the UK. Check the website to see our list of locations and clinics, schedules and booking availability.
If I cancel my booking, can I get a refund?
We operate a 48 hour cancellation policy.  If you cancel at least 48 hours prior to the day of your test you will not be charged.  Cancellations made less than 48 hours prior to the test day will not receive a refund. All refunds are made to the same credit/debit card used to secure the booking.
